Alex Poythress joined Zenit Saint-Petersburg on a one-year deal, the Russian club announced on Monday. Eurohoops previously reported on the deal between the two parties.
“I am very pleased to join Zenit, an organization that plans to make a breakthrough in EuroLeague this season,” he noted upon signing per the official site of his new team, “I heard a lot of amazing things about Saint-Petersburg and can’t wait to join the team.”
The powerful big, Kentucky alum, moved to Europe last season, with Galatasaray Doga Sigorta competed in the 7DAYS EuroCup averaging 13.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per appearance. He also posted 12.3 points per BSL match.
“We are very glad to have added Alex Poythress to our roster,” said head coach Xavi Pascual, “He can play equally well as a power forward and a center, which will give us a great advantage. At 26, he decided to take a step forward in his career by joining us. Zenit gains a strong athletic player who will surely delight our fans.”
Poythress made his way to 52 NBA games between the Indiana Pacers, the Atlanta Hawks, and the Philadelphia 76ers prior to opting to extend his career overseas. His choice now guides him to the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and the VTB United League as well.
Other summer signings for Zenit include Arturas Gudaitis, Kevin Pangos, and Denis Zakharov.
