Tony Parker was elected as one of the two new members of the Olympiques Lyonnais board, the French football (soccer) club announced on Friday. This expected move is considered another step towards him succeeding Jean-Michel Aulas as the president of the team.
French businessman, long-time owner and president Aulas, 71, plans to retire in 2023. He has endorsed the 4-time NBA champion to succeed him at the helm after being impressed by the recent successful partnership with Parker. Parker himself admitted that becoming the OL president is something he can’t refuse.
Parker, 38, bought a 20% stake in LDLC ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne before wrapping up his playing years. By 2014, he evolved into the majority shareholder and afterward the president. With him in charge, the French club returned to Turkish Airlines EuroLeague in 2019 for the first time since 2010.
Both teams are based in Lyon.
