Maurizio Gherardini, Fenerbahce Beko GM, was, as usual, in the center of attention during the annual season-opening Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Media Day and talked to Eurohoops about upcoming challenges and variations stemming from Zeljko Obradovic’s departure and the coronavirus pandemic.
“It was not an easy decision for me to stay due to the coronavirus pandemic and its overall impact,” he confessed, “We have a unique relationship with Zeljko Obradovic. He’s not just a coach, he’s one of my best friends. We shared a lot, talked a lot. As time went by, it looked like he was thinking more about his family and wanted to take a break. We are very lucky to be in this business, but at the same time, we have really stressful jobs. It is necessary to sometimes renew ourselves.”
“I feel very close to this club and the country,” he moved on to his own status, “I recalled my incredible experiences here. Of course, winning also helps. My passion for the city and the team, my responsibilities in very difficult, sensitive, and unpredictable times. After discussing with the management and the president, we reached an agreement for this transition process aiming to lift Fenerbahce at the highest possible point.”
“We need to share a lot on and off the court,” he said replying to a question on the challenging season ahead, “I share as much as possible with our players about the present and what can happen in the future. They understand our passion to return to action and keep the season going, but are also aware of potential risks and the need to be very careful.”
“Small mistakes can have a major negative effect,” he added, “Coaches and the entire organization have extended tasks. I want to thank the club at this point. They help us a lot in various ways including trips and accommodation. However, as I said, sharing information with the team is as important as being as good as possible on the court.”
