Real Madrid president Florentino Perez compared the planned European football Super League to the how clubs participate in EuroLeague, the top-tier continental basketball championship.
[In basketball] we live in that normality,” Perez said to the “El Larguero” show of Cadena Ser radio. “The ACB and the Euroleague, and nothing happens. The Euroleague was created with teams from Greece, Turkey, Russia … For example, Bayern Munich has a basketball team and it’s there.” Bayern Munich FC issued a statement rejecting the Super League.
“So I say, what happens? Is football different or how is this? It is important, in basketball it happens and people don’t complain. Euroleague saved [European] basketball,” Perez added.
Real Madrid was among the 12 founding clubs of a planned Super League, the creation of which was received with massive criticism and objections by clubs, football authorities (including UEFA) and fans around the globe. As a result of the backlash and following the withdrawal of some of the founding clubs, the Super League announced it suspension.
