Perhaps the biggest upset in the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments happened in Belgrade when Italy completely outplayed the Serbian national team for the place in Tokyo.
Italy played undisputedly better but there were also factors that limited Serbia’s effort. That was the case with Vasilije Micic who spent only 14 minutes on the court during which he scored eight points.
It wasn’t clear what happened at first, although the coaches of both sides in Igor Kokoskov and Romeo Sacchetti assumed the player was injured, and it was confirmed by the EuroLeague MVP himself the day after.
“I’ve never been looking for excuses in my life, it’s the same now. All I have to say is that at the end of the warm-up I felt a rupturing of the muscles in my quadriceps. Inexplicable how. I tried to play, I couldn’t give my maximum and that’s it. I am sorry that we did not qualify for the Olympic Games, but life goes on,” Micic told SportKlub with a quick statement.
