Just two rounds in the new Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season, Zalgiris Kaunas has decided to part ways with coach Martin Schiller, the club announced Friday. Jure Zdovc will take over the bench, as he returns to the EuroLeague after 10 years.
Zalgiris suffered a tough loss against Zenit at home on Thursday for Round 2 and combined with a loss by ASVEL on the road in the season-opener, the unconvincing start brought up a change.
“It is obvious that the team isn’t playing at the level, which everybody wants to see. We have mentioned a few days ago that everyone has to take responsibility for it. Unfortunately, we couldn’t waste precious time and had to take a quick decision. It doesn’t mean that everything that Coach Schiller was doing didn’t work. Throughout 15 months we took a lot of positivity from our collaboration. We want to thank Coach Schiller for his work and dedication”, said Zalgiris GM Paulius Motiejunas.
Schiller joined the Lithuanian side for the 2020-21 season, for his first EuroLeague experience.
Assistant coach Arne Woltmann will take over the team’s bench for their Sunday LKL game against Neptunas Klaipeda.
