Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv started the double-game week on a good note with a 76-62 victory against Zalgiris Kaunas at home to exceed its winning streak to three games.
After trailing 16-20 in the first quarter, Maccabi bounced back in the game and never let go of its lead to get a comfortable victory ahead of their Thursday contest against FC Barcelona.
Derrick Williams led all scorers for Giannis Sfairopoulos’ squad with 17 points, James Nunnally followed with 15 points and Ante Zizic posted 14 points and 9 rebounds. Keenan Evans added up to the list of top scorers with 13 points and 4 assists. With this win, the Israeli side improved to a 4-2 record.
Zalgiris picked up 17 points by Arturas Milaknis, who shot 5 out of 8 from the three-point line, while Josh Nebo tapped 10 points and 9 rebounds. The Lithuanian side remains winless so far in the new season and faces Anadolu Efes on Friday for Round 7.
Emmanuel Mudiay returned to action for the Lithuanian club but scored just two points. He also had five assists and two turnovers.
“I am not so disappointed. We have our problems, obviously. We miss a lot of players, we are not in a rhythm. But we showed character in some moments. If we believe in this, and keep going, we will find a way to our first win”, commented Zalgiris coach Jure Zdovc post-game.
