It is notable that two of the three had started the new season 0-4 and the other 1-4, but now they are sitting between seventh and 12th place in the standings. They no longer see the backs of almost all the other teams. More likely, some of those other teams are now looking over their shoulders at these rapid risers!
Eurohoops presents the turnaround trio.
UNICS KAZAN
Start off: 1-4
Acceleration: 5-1
Top speed: 7th place, 6-5
Power: UNICS has been waiting patiently since 2017 to return to the Euroleague, however, in the first five games, that return was far from pleasant. Everything changed after the victory over Baskonia (83-69 R6) in Kazan. Since then, UNICS is undefeated at home, even against the two teams currently sharing first place (vs. Real Madrid 65-58 R7, vs. AX Armani Exchange Milan 97-71 R10). They have also won on the road in places like OAKA (@ Panathinaikos 72-74 R9). The only time UNICS has lost since October 27 was against ASVEL (@ Villeurbanne 85-82 R8) in a game that came down to the final moments.
Driver’s seat: The trio of Lorenzo Brown, Mario Hezonja and Isaiah Canaan has been dangerous for every UNICS opponent. They have been steadily leading this surge. The best games of all three, with career-high or season-high performances, happened during this 5-1 push, with Hezonja posting 22 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in the last victory over ALBA (85-71 R11).
Start off: 0-4
Acceleration: 5-2
Top speed: 10th place, 5-6
Power: The worst start of a reigning champion in Euroleague history seems to have shaken Anadolu Efes Istanbul so much that they woke up from their “slumber” and started playing accordingly. Now the victories are more frequent than the defeats and more than convincing: +34 against Zalgiris Kaunas (94-60 R7), +27 against ALBA Berlin (63-90 R9), +19 against Olympiacos (88-69 R10 ), +21 against Monaco (98-77 R11). Defeats like the one against Panathinaikos (95-69 R6) and Zenit (79-90 R8) have tended to become an exception to the rule.
Driver’s seat: The scouting report of Efes‘ opponents usually starts with Shane Larkin and Vasilije Micic. Lately, however, Rodrigue Beaubois has been stirring trouble like no other for opposing defenses. He tied a career-high with 29 points on 7-for-10 three-point shooting in the victory over Olympiacos and followed up with 17 points and a career-high 7 assists in the last W against Monaco.
FC BAYERN MUNICH
Start off: 0-4
Acceleration: 5-2
Top speed: 12th place, 5-6
Power: After its historic first qualification to the playoffs last spring, Bayern had the opposite fortune through the first four games of this season. However, the way the team lost those games, by margins 8 points or less, showed a fighting spirit that sooner or later would be rewarded. And since they did not become the first team to lose to Zalgiris (73-75 R5), they became the first to beat Milan (83-77 R6). That was it. The only parenthesis was the back-to-back defeats to Real Madrid (76-80 R8) and Monaco (94-71 R9), which they quickly left behind with consecutive victories in Munich (vs. Fenerbahce 71-63 R10, vs. Panathinaikos 81-78 R11).
Driver’s seat: The return of Vladimir Lucic (12.9 points) to action (injured in the first four games), came to provide valuable solutions to an already balanced team. There is no other club in the Euroleague with five players averaging double-digit points (Darrun Hilliard 14.6 points, Corey Walden 12.2 points, Augustine Rubit 10.4 points, Deshaun Thomas 10.1 points).
