French prospect Victor Wembanyama will be sidelined for the next four to six weeks due to a right shoulder injury, LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne announced Monday.
Wembanyama, 17, has put up 5.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per Turkish Airlines EuroLeague game. Previous injuries have limited him to six appearances so far in his debut campaign in Europe’s premier club continental competition. He was a member of T.J. Parker’s starting unit from Round 13 through Round 15 before sitting out the bottom end of the double-game week, the road game versus Olympiacos, and eventually entered in the injury list.
In France’s Betclic LNB Pro A, the 7-foot-2 center has produced 6.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, one block, 0.8 steals, and 0.6 assists per contest over five appearances.
He is currently projected to be eligible for the 2023 NBA draft.
Teammates Charles Kahudi (shoulder), Antoine Diot (calf), David Lighty (hand), and Raymar Morgan (back) are already out for the team located in the city of Villeurbanne, which is a suburb of Lyon, France.
ASVEL is coming off five losses in a row across all competitions. The losing streak has forced the team owned by Tony Parker down to 7-9 and in a five-way tie in ninth place of the EuroLeague table with Fenerbahce Beko, Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, Crvena Zvezda mts, and FC Bayern Munich. Coming up on Thursday, the Round 17 home fixture opposite Fener. At the domestic level, the 7-5 W-L tally is tied for fifth with Elan Bearnais Pau-Lacq-Orthez.
