Olimpia Milano confirmed Tuesday six COVID-19 cases within the team and their upcoming game against Zalgiris Kaunas (December 22, 19:00 CET) has to be postponed.
According to the Italian authorities, Milano may resume its sports activities no earlier than December 27, after more testing is conducted.
Milano is currently placed fifth in the EuroLeague standings, with a 10-6 record.
Per the team’s announcement:
“Olimpia Milano reports that six members of the Team Group have tested positive for Covid-19. The club promptly notified the local health authorities and received the following communication from them: “In relation to the quick development of a Covid outbreak involving six members of the team group, taking into account the epidemiological situation of the strong increase of infections and the possible circulation of more contagious variants, the suspension of sports activities and the home quarantine for the members of the team group are ordered. Sports activity may resume on December 27, after carrying out a negative third-generation antigen test and simultaneous molecular testing”.
EuroLeague also confirmed the news of the postponement with an additional announcement Monday:
“The Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season Round 17 game between Zalgiris Kaunas and AX Armani Exchange Milan, originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday, December 22, has been suspended. Milan requested the suspension due to local legislation imposing quarantine measures on the team after several team members tested positive for COVID-19, which leaves it without the minimum eight players on the Authorization List fit to play.
Following the Special Regulations due to COVID-19, approved by the ECA Shareholders Executive Board, each game can be rescheduled up to three times, if there are available dates. Euroleague Basketball will coordinate with both teams the best options to reschedule the game. Alternative dates will be announced on official Euroleague Basketball platforms once confirmed”.
