Zalgiris Kaunas is closer to the Russian-Ukrainian war than most Euroleague teams, considering it comes from Lithuania and the club has made it clear what their stance is on the whole situation. They support Ukraine.
The team sent a message of support via Twitter stating: “Our hearts go to our Ukrainian brothers. Heroiam slava!”
Zalgiris also made a statement via Facebook and confirmed that they are working with other clubs on a united decision regarding the situation.
“Zalgiris Kaunas do not ignore the events in Ukraine and organize a conversation with the EuroLeague management in order to jointly assess the situation and agree on further actions. We are already discussing this issue with several EuroLeague clubs and we will all be looking at this situation at league level. In this case, the united decision of the league is necessary.”
It should also be noted that Zalgiris has yet to play the rematches against CSKA and Zenit on March 25th and April 8th respectively. Both on the road. Additionally, the Lithuanian Basketball Federation urged its members to terminate all contacts Russian and Belarusian sports entities in the near future.
