Zalgiris boycotting games vs. CSKA, Zenit

Zalgiris Kaunas announced that the team has decided to not play the EuroLeague road games against Russian sides CSKA Moscow and Zenit St. Petersburg that are scheduled for 25/3 and 8/4 respectively.

The decision of Zalgiris to boycott those matches is “in response to recent events in Ukraine which was attacked by Russian military forces,” per the Lithuanian club’s announcement.

Zalgiris general manager Paulius Motiejunas mentioned that his organization plans to hold discussions with other EuroLeague clubs and propose for all matches against Russian teams (CSKA, Zenit and Unics Kazan) to be boycotted.

“As we have announced, we have initiated talks with EuroLeague on the situation,” Motiejunas said in a statement. “Although the league will discuss all issues at a meeting tomorrow afternoon, we decided that such a response is too slow and we have already made a decision: Zalgiris Kaunas will not go to Russia where the two regular-season matches have to be played. We’ll talk to ‘Western European’ clubs competing in EuroLeague and propose to make a joint decision to boycott all matches with Russian teams and not only those in Russia.”
