The ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia has forced several players to leave Russian clubs in the past few days. CSKA Moscow confirmed Sunday that German big man Johannes Voigtmann is also departing from the club in the coming days and returning to Germany.
CSKA further announced that Tornike Shengelia, Iffe Lundberg, and Marius Grigonis have left/will leave the team in the coming days, confirming reports which surfaced this weekend. Earlier on Sunday, Lundberg announced his return to Denmark through his social media.
It should be noted that all four players are still under contract with the Russian club. As highlighted by CSKA in their statement, “the club treats the personal situation of each of the players with understanding” and contract violations will be resolved after the “political and sports situation returns to normal”.
Per CSKA Moscow’s press release:
“For personal reasons related to the current situation between Russia and Ukraine, as well as its possible consequences, Tornike Shengelia and Iffe Lundberg left the location of CSKA. In the near future, Marius Grigonis and Johannes Voigtmann will also go to their homeland. The actions of the players are a violation of the terms of the contract and club regulations, but the club treats the personal situation of each of the players with understanding. The status of player agreements will be resolved when the political and sports situation in Europe returns to normal.
All other basketball players and coaches continue to prepare for the upcoming games accordingly to the usual schedule.
The club monitors the development of the situation, focusing on the decisions of government organizations and tournaments in which the team takes part.”
