Unics Kazan is suing forward Jarrell Brantley for 250,000 according to Ian Begley of SNY. The club is reported to have expressed “disappointment” for the player’s departure from the team.
Begley also reports that Brantley is trying to sign in G-League and that Unics is making an effort to stop the transfer.
Brantley is among the several non-Russian players that have left the country in light of the invasion of Ukraine. When the war began, all EuroLeague Russian clubs (CSKA Moscow, Zenit St. Petersburg and Unics) allowed non-Russian players and staff to return to their home countries.
Unics president Evgeny Bogachev commented that foreign players and coaches are “sent home since everyone is scared” due to the conflict while general manager Claudio Coldebella said that all are free to leave “until the situation settles down.”
This decision was taken while Unics’s trip to Italy for a game against Olimpia Milano was in limbo due to sanctions on flights from Russia. Ultimately, the match was suspended and some players didn’t even return to Kazan. EuroLeague has since suspended all games of Russian clubs and may even annul their season, depending on the situation in Ukraine.
Brantley signed with Unics in September to make his European debut after spending the first two years of his career with the Utah Jazz. He played 23 EuroLeague games, averaging 3.3 points and 1.6 rebounds in 12:58 minutes.
