Zalgiris Kaunas GM Paulius Motiejunas addressed the current EuroLeague situation and the pending vacancy of the competition’s CEO position, along with his concerns, during the press conference for newly-appointed head coach Kazys Maksvytis.

Motiejunas who is representing one of the clubs-shareholders of the joint EuroLeague-IMG venture noted the fact that there’s a “crisis between the EuroLeague clubs and the league management”.

“Complete chaos – decisions are delayed, leadership is lacking, communication is not what it used to be. There is no unity between the clubs regarding the leader Jordi Bertomeu. In May we will try to restore it and find a common denominator,” said the Zalgiris GM as adapted by delfi.lt.

Zalgiris ended the 2021-22 EuroLeague regular season with a win over Crvena Zvezda on April 3 and an 8-20 record at the bottom of the standings after the elimination of Russian clubs.

In the meantime, the Lithuanian club has been fined 9,000 euros by the competition for fans’ chants against Serbia, following Crvena Zvezda officials’ decision for players not to carry the “stop the war” sign with the colors of Ukraine during the pre-tip-off presentation.

Motiejunas further mentioned in the press conference that the reports about the creation of a new continental competition featuring Russian teams is ‘fake news’. As he explained: “We talked to CSKA people and they confirmed they are not planning such a project”.
