Fenerbahce Beko and Marial Shayok mutually agreed to go separate ways, the team announced Friday.
Shayok, 26, joined the Turkish giant in late June inking a contract for the 2021-22 season with an option for the 2022-23 season. However, he was released and became a free agent before the conclusion of the ongoing season.
Coming out of Iowa State, he was picked by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 54th overall selection of the 2019 NBA draft. After recording four NBA games played, he moved his talents to Turkey and Frutti Extra Bursaspor before shifting to Fener.
The Ottawa-born swingman dealing with multiple injuries limited his appearances with his second team in Turkey. Making his way to 15 games of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague in his European club continental competitions debut averaged 4.6 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. At the domestic level, he went for 7.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per BSL contest in nine appearances.
The team based in Istanbul missed the EuroLeague Playoffs. At the end of the Regular Season, its 10-18 W-L tally was four games away from a Playoffs berth. The 2021-22 season also features a Turkish Cup (Bitci Erkekler Turkiye Kupasi) final loss to Anadolu Efes in February.
With three games remaining on the regular-season schedule of the Turkish League, Fenerbahce is tied with Efes on top of the standings. The Istanbul rivals, both carrying a 21-6 record, are considered the favorites to overpower respective opponents in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals, and eventually meet each other once again in the Finals.
