Long-time Real Madrid player Rudy Fernandez has lost his father. The Spanish club sent its condolences to the 37-year-old guard/forward and his family.
Per the official announcement: “Real Madrid C. F., its president and Board of Directors are saddened to hear of the passing of Rodolfo Fernández, the father of our player, Rudy Fernández.
Real Madrid its condolences and affections to his wife, Maite, his children, Rudy and Marta, and all his family and loved ones.
Rodolfo Fernández has passed away at 66 years of age. May he rest in peace.”
Multiple more teams and associations located all around Europe joined in expressing condolences to two-time Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion and former NBA player.
A few years back, Fernandez revealed his father had been diagnosed with a glioblastoma.
Rodolfo Fernandez had played basketball for several Spanish teams. His daughter and Rudy’s sister, Marta was another basketball player in the family until retiring in 2015.
Qualified to the 2022 EuroLeague Final Four, the Whites will face archrival FC Barcelona in the Semifinals of the tournament at Belgrade’s Stark Arena Thursday. Next Saturday, Pablo Laso’s side will play for the championship or third place, depending on the outcome of the approaching matchup opposite Barca.
At the domestic level, the team from Madrid is scheduled to finish Spain’s Liga Endesa Regular Season by visiting Gran Canaria tomorrow Saturday. The Playoffs of the ACB will conclude the 2021-22 campaign with the team already locked in the second seed of the bracket.
