Real Madrid head coach Pablo Laso was admitted to the hospital Sunday after a heart attack, and although his condition is stable, it’s understandable that he will remain away from basketball for a while on his road to recovery.
Assistant coach Chus Mateo will take over the Real Madrid bench, most likely for the remainder of the season. Mateo had already taken charge of the team when Laso tested positive for COVID-19 back in December 2021.
At the moment, Real leads the semifinals series against Baskonia 2-0 with Game 3 underway Tuesday, for a chance to seal a ticket to the ACB finals with a sweep.
Laso has been discharged from the intensive care unit of the Hospital de la Moraleja and was transferred to the plant where his progress will continue to be monitored, the team announced Monday. All signs point to a long-term absence from basketball, as he will probably have to undergo cardiac rehabilitation, as well as several lifestyle changes in the near future in order to recover.
