FC Bayern Munich completed its second summer signing by penning Jan Niklas Wimberg to a two-year contract, as announced Sunday.
Wimberg, 26, carrying the experience of 15 games in the Basketball Champions League and 11 appearances in the 7DAYS EuroCup, set himself up to debut in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. Previous European club continental competition stems from his first professional team EWE Baskets Oldenburg. He has since displayed his talents at Oettinger Rockets, Eisbaren Bremerhaven, and Niners Chemnitz.
“I have always dreamed and worked toward playing at the highest European level,” noted the German forward, per the press release, with a helping hand from Google Translate, “The last three years have prepared me well and now I have the opportunity to be a part of something big in one of the strongest organizations in Europe. I am really looking forward to this challenge and will continue to work hard to take the next step.”
At the international level, Wimberg has represented Germany in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Split and the ensuing 2020 Olympic Games held last summer in Tokyo after he debuted at the senior level by playing in the 2022 EuroBasket Qualifiers. He was also capped with the U20, U18, and U16 national teams between 2011 and 2018.
Already landed in Munich was youngster Danko Brankovic, while Othello Hunter, Augustine Rubit, and Nick Weiler-Babb all signed contract extensions during the offseason. In addition, Vladimir Lucic, Ognjen Jaramaz, and Corey Walden are still under contract.
