Following a couple of productive campaigns in Europe, Jonah Mathews penned a contract to move to LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. He joined the French champions for the 2022-23 season, the team announced Tuesday.
Mathews, 24, averaged 18.0 points, 3.8 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game in Poland’s PLK playing for Anwil Wloclawek last season. Moreover, he helped his side become the champion of the inaugural season of the European North Basketball League. His first professional season was based in Finland as a member of the Koping Stars.
Following the leap from Finland to Poland, the former USC standout is officially set to complete an even bigger jump landing in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, the premier club continental competition in Europe. In addition, he will display his talents in France’s Betclic Elite LNB Pro A.
Before the next season at the club level, he might represent Poland in the 2022 EuroBasket. He is a candidate to receive a Polish passport, as noted in the press release announcing his addition to ASVEL. Poland will be competing in Group D of the preliminary round along with the Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, the Netherlands, and Serbia in Prague. The top four teams will travel to Berlin to participate in the knockout stage of the FIBA tournament.
The French team, controlled by legendary player Tony Parker, had already added Parker Jackson-Cartwright, Nando de Colo, and Amine Noua to start the offseason. Also, head coach T.J. Parker penned a three-year contract extension.
