From missing the entire 2021-22 season to another lengthy stint on the injury list for Awudu Abass.

Abass, 29, underwent right knee arthroscopy and will be re-evaluated in 90 days, Virtus Segafredo Bologna announced Thursday. Scheduling the surgery last week, the team was expecting the international player for Italy to be sidelined at the top end of the 2022-23 season.

Suffering a torn ACL suffered last September, he was forced to sit out the 2021-22 season. Finally returning to action was met with yet another setback leading him back to the injury list.

Projected to be cleared during the next season, he will be up for the fourth personal campaign in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. The previous 35 appearances are split between EAT Emporio Armani Milan/AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan and Mapooro Cantu. As the 7DAYS EuroCup champion, the Bologna outfit itself will be back in Europe’s premier club continental competition after 14 years.

Also out to start the new season is Tornike Shengelia. Committed to the Georgia senior national team for the 2022 EuroBasket, he picked up a shoulder injury and ended up missing the tournament. While dealing with the injury, he signed a new contract with Virtus Bologna. His recovery has since been monitored by the medical staff of the Italian club.

Ismael Bako, Gora Camara, Isaia Cordinier, Daniel Hackett, Mouhammadou Jaiteh, Gabriel Iffe Lundberg, Leo Menalo, Jordan Mickey, Semi Ojeleye, Alessandro Pajola, Michele Ruzzier, and Milos Teodosic make out the rest of the squad for the team coached by Sergio Scariolo, recently crowned 2022 EuroBasket champion as Spain’s play-caller.
