Real Madrid HC Chus Mateo: “If Campazzo fits, he is welcome”

A pretty deep squad is already in place for Real Madrid. However, a player the likes of former Madrid star Facundo Campazzo would be a pleasant view for Chus Mateo.

Touching on the subject, the head coach of the storied club was not keen on ruling out Campazzo for a spot on the team but was clear on focusing on the current members of the squad.

“I wish there can be a place for him. If he fits, he is welcome,” he mentioned after his side secured the win on the road against Girona Wednesday evening, “We are very fond of him and know what he brings to the table. If he comes, that’s fantastic, but the players that really matter now are those we have in the dressing room.”

Campazzo, 31, played for Real Madrid before making the jump to the NBA and Denver Nuggets in November 2020. The Argentinian point guard averaged 5.7 points, 3.4 assists, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per contest over 144 appearances, before becoming a free agent as the Nuggets opted to move into a new direction for the 2022-23 squad. A return to the EuroLeague powerhouse is a real possibility.

A winning and also rocky start in terms of injuries for Los Blancos. Before launching the 2022-23 edition of Spain’s Liga Endesa with a win, the team strolled past Coosur Real Betis and edged out rival FC Barcelona to win the 2022 Supercopa Endesa in Seville. Nigel Williams-Goss and Carlos Alocen were on the injury list and got more guests in Rudy Fernandez and Adam Hanga, limiting the options available in a packed schedule.

The team guided by Mateo will host Monbus Obradoiro in Round 2 of the new ACB Regular Season Sunday. Next Thursday, opening the new season of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, the team will be in Greece visiting Panathinaikos.
