Sergi Martinez will undergo left knee surgery later this week.
Martinez, 23, will be operated Thursday, FC Barcelona announced Monday. He picked up an injury to the patellar tendon in his left knee. Further updates, including the initial timetable for his return to action, will be shared accordingly following surgery.
So far in the 2022-23 season, Martinez has been limited to two appearances in Spain’s Liga Endesa tallying one rebound and one assist over 14 minutes. He was ruled out of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season Round 1 contest opposite Olympiacos held last Friday.
Nikola Mirotic (Achilles) and Kyle Kuric (head) are both already sidelined. The team coached by Sarunas Jasikevicius currently sits at 0-1 in EuroLeague and at 2-1 in the ACB. An earlier loss to archrival Real Madrid held Barca to runner-up in the 2022 Supercopa Endesa played 24-25 September in Seville. The next matchup versus Madrid comes up Thursday, in Round 2 of the EuroLeague’s Regular Season.
Coming out of the youth academy, Martinez has spent his entire career at the Catalonia powerhouse. After a successful run with the second team and debuting with the senior team during the 2019-20 season, he became a regular member of the first team in 2020-21 under the guidance of Lithuanian play-caller Jasikevicius. A total of 59 games played in EuroLeague and 70 in Spain’s top-tier division describe his first-team ventures. Beyond the club level, he has represented Spain across all junior national teams, between 2014 and 2019.
