Baskonia has announced that they have the rights of Luca Vildoza in Europe, they have not approved the already official move to Crvena Zvezda and they will take legal action against the player.
Per the press release:
Given the announcement by RED STAR OF BELGRADE, through its official channels, of the hiring of Player LUCA VILDOZA, and given the seriousness of the situation generated, the Board of Directors of SASKI BASKONIA, S.A.D. wants to express the following:
1º.- SASKI BASKONIA, S.A.D. is the holder of the player’s rights outside the NBA, as agreed between the Player himself and the Club, in the agreement for his departure from the NBA and joining the New York Nicks, in the month of May 2021, which means that in the case of signing with a Club outside the NBA, either the player or the Club they join must financially compensate SASKI BASKONIA, S.A.D.
2º.- In the case of the hiring of the Player LUCA VILDOZA by RED STAR OF BELGRADE, it has been carried out without the participation or consent of SASKI BASKONIA, S.A.D., without even receiving any communication in this regard, and without paying the agreed financial compensation, which represents a very serious breach of the agreements reached for his departure to the NBA, attributable to the Player and the Club of destination of the same.
3º.- In such a situation, SASKI BASKONIA, S.A.D. as soon as became aware of the hiring of the player by RED STAR, has expressly and irrefutably required both the Club and the Player himself, our rights. And likewise, this situation has been reported to EUROLEAGUE, requesting the application of the appropriate legal measures, and in particular, the suspension of the Player’s registration with the RED STAR OF BELGRADE, in order to maintain the integrity of the competition, which could be affected, otherwise.
4º.- Finally, if the previous agreements are not fulfilled within the required periods, SASKI BASKONIA, S.A.D. will proceed to exercise the appropriate legal actions, in defense to the last extent of their rights, both against the Player and against RED STAR OF BELGRADE, as jointly and severally liable for said behavior in accordance with the regulatory regulations of EUROLEAGUE.
It has to be noted that this kind of private agreement between a player and a club is not part of an extended legal frame and it’s questionable if EuroLeague can prevent the registration of the player.
