Jake Layman was waived by the Boston Celtics and Panathinaikos is in advanced talks with the player. Per Eurohoops sources, the negotiations are moving fast and the player is expected to travel soon to Greece.
Panathinaikos was in the market for one more power forward, however, the club was in contact with Layman’s side for a long time, expressing their interest.
If signed, the 28-years old player will be the eighth non-Greek player on the Panathinaikos roster.
This is not an issue for the EuroLeague, but due to the seven foreigners limit in the Greek league – with only six of them being available during games – either one of the non-Greek players of Panathinaikos will be registered only in the EuroLeague, or a cut would be made.
Layman was drafted with the 47th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic before being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers on draft night. He spent three seasons in Portland before being dealt to the Timberwolves as part of a sign-and-trade deal. He was signed by the Celtics in free agency in September 2022.
Panathinaikos’ interest in the player was first reported by SDNA.
