AS Monaco is not expected to participate in the EuroLeague competition next year, even if the team does not make the playoffs this season, according to Yann Ohnona of L’Equipe.
They reportedly obtained a guarantee for the 2023-24 EuroLeague season.
“To say that the place is already ‘guaranteed’ is not technically true. But I will say it this way: we want Monaco to continue to evolve in the EuroLeague,” EuroLeague CEO Marshall Glickman told L’Equipe when asked about the spot.
L’Equipe adds that Monaco’s participation will require ratification by the EuroLeague shareholders.
“There are 18 clubs, and 13 have permanent member licenses. One of these shareholders, CSKA Moscow, is suspended due to the war in Ukraine. This gives us a bit of space. Assuming that CSKA will not return next season – even if no one knows what is happening in geopolitical terms – keeping Monaco should not be a problem. Once Moscow is reintegrated, it will be more complicated,” he added.
Glickman is clear. He wants Monaco in the EuroLeague.
“In any case, the simplest thing for Monaco would be to qualify due to their sporting results. But let’s be clear: we want Monaco. We want them to be part of the EuroLeague family, and we are very optimistic that they will soon be able to build a new gym with the required capacity,” EuroLeague CEO concluded.
