Interviewed by Corriere di Bologna on the occasion of Bayern Munich-Virtus Bologna, the sporting director of the German team Daniele Baiesi discussed some interesting topics.
First, he suggested the perfect formula for EuroLeague clubs in the domestic league. “I’ve been supporting it since I was a journalist over 20 years ago. There will come a time when teams of a certain level will have to join the championship from the playoffs forward, as is already the case in Serbia. I understand that small clubs benefit from the incomes with the bigs, but you can not do obscurantism, which is the opposite of progress: we are in 2023 but anchored to 1980”, he said.
Then, he went on to talk about the growth of the German side since his arrival from Brose Bamberg. “I arrived at Bayern in 2017 and the victory in the German championship opened the door to the Euroleague. Like Virtus, we earned it on the court and then we kept it by providing a corporate structure that first hired me full-time by acquiring the figure of sporting director that was not there before”, he said.
“Then action was taken in other areas within a 70-employee structure that sells 18 million euros of sponsorships. We have a brand and a market that Euroleague is interested in: we are Bayern of Neuer, Lewandowski, and before that Rummenigge, Kahn, and Hoeness. Then, on their wave, we come”, he added.
Bayern Munich will face Virtus Bologna at 20:45 CET in Round 21 of the 2022-23 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. The German team is currently in the playoff race with an 8-12 record.
