A total of 306 games were played in the regular season, another 16 to 24 will be played in the playoffs and Final Four in Kaunas (19-21/5). Regardless of the remaining number, one thing is certain: The Euroleague will have a new champion after the elimination of back to back trophy holders Anadolu Efes.
What else could be certain? Nothing in this Euroleague, perhaps the most unpredictable in modern history. As 21 editors of Eurohoops agree, on the only thing that is, since their answers to the relevant poll varied.
Here’s how they voted for the four quarter-final series and the final at Zalgirio Arena:
PLAYOFFS (best of five)
(1) OLYMPIAKOS – (8) FENERBAHCE
Olympiacos gets the recognition of all opponents and all 21 Eurohoops editors… but one. Olympiacos collected 95.2% of the votes, and Fenerbahce only had 4.8% of this one and only vote.
(2) BARCELONA – (7) ZALGIRIS
What was not done for the sake of Olympiakos was done for the sake of Barcelona. The 21 editors predict a unanimous (100%) qualification of Sarunas Jasikevicius’ Barcelona over his childhood love Zalgiris Kaunas.
(3) REAL MADRID – (6) PARTIZAN
This is the most ambiguous series, according to (also) the predictions of the editors of Eurohoops, who gave Real Madrid a qualification advantage with 66.7%. Partizan and Zeljko Obradovic will try to surpass their 33.3%.
(4) MONACO – (8) MACCABI TEL AVIV
Home advantage does not guarantee qualification, as do the 21 Eurohoops editors in the case of the Monaco and Maccabi Tel Aviv pair. The Yellows collected 71.4% of the votes against 28.6% for the La Roca Team.
Olympiacos 95.2% – Fenerbahce 4.8%
Barcelona 100% – Zalgiris 0%
Real Madrid 66.7% – Partizan 33.3%
Monaco 28.6% – Maccabi Tel Aviv 71.4%
1ST SEMI-FINAL
The 21 Eurohoops editors were more clear on which team will continue from the first semi-final to the final. Regardless of the opponent, Olympiacos has been classified as a favorite with 95.2%, while the remaining 4.8% again belongs to Fenerbahce from the initial results of the poll.
Olympiacos – 95.2%
Fenerbahce – 4.8%
Monaco – 0%
Maccabi Tel Aviv – 0%
2ND SEMI-FINAL
Things in the second semi-final seem more fluid to the editors of Eurohoops who voted in the poll. Barcelona collected 47.6% of the votes, with Real Madrid being their main competitor here too, with 33.3%. Partizan still has an outsider role (19%).
Barcelona – 47.6%
Real Madrid – 33.3%
Partizan – 19%
FINAL
If you missed the title, which we don’t think so, Olympiacos is the favorite to win the Euroleague. His possible presence in the final implies in the Eurohoops poll with a 71.4% chance of passing from theory to practice. Real Madrid, less Partizan, and even less Barcelona shared the rest of the votes.
Olympiacos – 71.4%
Real Madrid – 14.3%
Partizan – 9.5%
Barcelona – 4.8%
