Just like every year, the EuroLeague Players’ Association has started to announce the Awards for the EuroLeague Season, with its members voting. Today, it was announced that the 28-year-old Darius Thompson, after dragging Baskonia close to the Playoffs, was named “Best Newcomer”, performing at a high level despite his rookie status under head coach Joan Peñarroya.
Baskonia‘s playmaker, in his first-ever season playing in the EuroLeague, averaged 12.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game, shooting 55.8% from two, and getting attention from major European teams. According to Eurohoops sources, Olimpia Milano is interested in his case but there’s nothing yet on the table for the former Happy Casa Brindisi player.
Other than the former Lokomotiv Kuban playmaker, Luke Sikma and Kyle Hines have been awarded as well. The ALBA Berlin forward was described as “A player with exemplary behavior towards opponents and referees, promoting the spirit of fair play”, getting the “Fair Play” Award for the second straight year, while Milano‘s center was named “Most Respected Player” for the third time in a row.
