Starting the EuroLeague season with Anadolu Efes, mid-way through the year Achille Polonara decided to move and join Zalgiris Kaunas to grow in numbers and minutes. After winning two trophies in Lithuania, the Italian 31-year-old has now parted ways with the green-and-white team.
Signing a six-month deal with Kazys Maksvytis’ team, the former Fenerbahce and Baskonia player was almost certain to leave the Baltic country at the end of the season, and this possibility now became reality. In the last EuroLeague season between Ergin Ataman’s team and Zalgiris, he averaged 4.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in 18:02 minutes on the court.
“Playing here is beautiful, it’s an amazing sensation, and I feel very good. It was not an easy start for me here in Kaunas, because it is the first season in which I change teams in mid-season. But I settled in slowly, and now I feel very comfortable. In addition, there is a great passion for basketball, Zalgiris is a religion in Kaunas: it is really beautiful”, he previously said in an exclusive interview with Eurohoops during the 2023 Final Four in Kaunas.
