Barcelona announced that the club terminated guard Cory Higgins’ contract. The 34-year-old player was signed to a contract extension deal until June 2024.
In its press release, Barcelona says that the club officially communicated to Higgins’ legal representatives their decision to part ways with him. The Blaugrana mention that they decided in compliance with the “Plan of Economic Viability” that was set by the FC Barcelona organization as a part of a series of budget cuts.
In late July, Barcelona also announced the termination of superstar Nikola Mirotic’s contract for the same reasons.
Higgins underwent a season-ending back surgery in May. During the summer, he was a target of Crvena Zvezda but the Serbian club had doubts regarding his health status following the operation.
Four years ago, Higgins signed with Barcelona after a very successful EuroLeague run with CSKA Moscow that included the championship titles of 2016 and 2019. In 2021 he helped the team reach its first EuroLeague Final since 2010, posting 13.1 points, 2.4 assists and 2.2 rebounds in the season overall. He also hit an iconic game-winner in the semifinal vs. Olimpia Milano.
During his stint with the Catalan powerhouse, Higgins won the Spanish ACB League titles of 2021 and 2023 while claiming the 2021 Copa del Rey. During his last season, averaged 8.7 points and 2.2 rebounds in 19:49 minutes in EuroLeague, along with 9.8 points and 2.2 rebounds over 17:25 minutes in 16 Spanish League games.
