Virtus Segafredo Bologna made a return to the EuroLeague last summer after a 14-year absence, and the Italian powerhouse is once again among the top European teams.
In preparation for the 2023/24 season, the team underwent several changes, starting with the appointment of Luca Banchi in place of Sergio Scariolo. Additionally, six new players joined the team: Bruno Mascolo, Jaleen Smith, Ognjen Dobric, Achille Polonara, Davontae Cacok, and Bryant Dunston.
Under Banchi’s leadership, Virtus had a stellar start to the season, clinching the Italian Supercup. They defeated Olimpia Milano and dominated over Germani Brescia in the final, securing their first trophy of the season.
On the day of the EuroLeague opener at Paladozza against Zalgiris Kaunas, Virtus released a video chronicling the beginning of the season, including the initial training sessions and the Super Cup victory.
Fans supported the team every step of the way, even filling the stands during practices. The club also shared a motivational speech from club owner Massimo Zanetti to the team. “The most important thing is to give everything you have for Virtus,” Zanetti emphasized.
One of the new additions to the squad is experienced Italian national team player Achile Polonara. The former Baskonia, Fenerbahce, Anadolu Efes, and Zalgiris player shared his thoughts on the team. “The roster is truly top-notch, with many players boasting extensive experience, especially in the EuroLeague. This sets us up for a very promising season,” Polonara stated.
Following Marco Bellineli’s remarks, it’s evident that Virtus is highly motivated to achieve something special this season. “I’m still thinking about game 7, the Coppa Italia final loss, so I have something inside me, and all my teammates feel the same way,” Bellineli revealed.
It’s quite clear that Virtus has set high goals for this season, and the Super Cup is just the beginning.
