ALBA Berlin announces the return of Martin Hermannsson

It’s official: Martin Hermannsson has returned to ALBA Berlin after three and a half years spent in Valencia, as Las Provincias, COPE Valencia, and Eurohoops previously reported.

The Icelandic guard has signed a deal with the German team until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Hermannsson unregistered from the EuroLeague on time, and as the deal got closed before February 7th, he’ll be eligible to play in the top continental competition for ALBA for the rest of the 2023/24 season.

ALBA Berlin’s Sports Director, Himar Ojeda, believes Hermannsson will be a great addition to Israel Gonzalez’s team.

We are very pleased that Martin Hermannsson is returning to us. He developed very strongly during his two years with us and played a decisive role in our winning the double in 2020. He is a great addition to our team. Martin is an experienced point guard who will help us on the court but can also take on a mentoring role for our young guards. After a long injury break, Martin did not have many opportunities to prove himself at Valencia. With us, he can show what a great player he is and perhaps even continue to develop,” Ojeda said.

The five-time winner of the Icelandic Basketball Player of the Year award wants to prove himself again in ALBA’s jersey.

I am very excited to come back to ALBA. My family and I enjoyed our time in Berlin, and we are already looking forward to many new experiences—on the basketball court and beyond. Also, I can’t wait to prove myself again after my injury last year and help the team in every way possible. Let’s go, ALBA!” Hermannsson said.

The 29-year-old player started his professional career in his hometown Reykjavik back in 2009 and moved in 2016 to France, where he spent two seasons playing for Étoile Charleville-Mézières and Champagne Châlons-Reims. He signed for ALBA for the first time back in 2018 and became a Bundesliga champion in 2020, just before moving his talents to Spain.

Unfortunately, injuries have been a constant issue for the Icelander since he arrived in Valencia. This season, he has only played seven official games, three in the ACB League (5.3 points and 1.7 assists), and four in the EuroLeague (3 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists).
