EuroLeague Players Association (ELPA) managing director Bostjan Nachbar commented on the recent news that a trade mechanism may be implemented in the competition.
“The idea of ‘trade mechanism’ in EuroLeague caught some attention lately. While there is no meaningful upside for ELPAto agree on ‘trades’ in EuroLeague, it should be added that in order to (in theory) create such mechanism, this brings some unavoidable legal questions,” Nachbar tweeted.
He then added: “Nearly impossible ‘transfer’ of player contracts cross-borders & cross-domestic leagues prevents the option of having such system in the first place. Player contracts would most likely have to be terminated first, and then (re)signed with a new team, under the same conditions. This basically takes away the option of changing teams being a ‘trade’, such as we know in the NBA. But, if we are talking about terminating player contracts and then signing with the new team – we actually already see that now, during the EuroLeague transfer window.”
EuroLeague Head Coaches Board (EHCB) Goran Sasic recently broke the news that trades could be arriving in EuroLeague in the following (2024-25) season. While there are talks between ELPA and EHCB on the matter, the EuroLeague Board have not yet included the trade possibilities in its discussion topics.
