On April 17, 2018, Real Madrid suffered one of the biggest losses in the history of the club, falling to Panathinaikos Athens 95 – 67 in Game 1 of the EuroLeague playoffs. The Greens, who actually made a historic 20-0 run in the game, had the advantage and the momentum to win the series.
“It looked bleak,” Real Madrid legend Jaycee Carroll said to Eurohoops on that loss. “And then that night, Pablo Laso had us watch the entire game. We spent four hours. After the game, the same night. It wasn’t fun. It was terrible.”
“He’s like… ‘look at this guy, he knocks you on the ground and then stands over you. You gonna stand for that? Look at him just beat you up. They’re laughing at the bench.’,” Carroll added on his coach’s comments.
“Pablo mixed up the lineup for the next game,” Carroll mentioned. “He put Rudy Fernandez, me, Felipe Reyes, Luka Doncic and Trey Thompkins. We came out and we were just on it man.”
Real didn’t only bounce back to tie the series in Game 2 but went on to take two more wins at home to advance to the Final Four. They completed their EuroLeague season with another pair of victories to claim the championship as Luka Doncic was named Final Four MVP.
“We’ve all seen it. The dude [Luka Doncic] is magic.”
