With less than one minute remaining in the fourth quarter, during Roger Grimau’s timeout with Barcelona down against Baskonia in the ACB, one of the lights of the Fernando Buesa Arena fell down on the court, potentially causing several injuries.
The dangerous incident happened during one of the Baskonia dancers’ shows that also included the mascot of the club. Now, the Basque side released an official statement on the matter, specifying the light belongs to the video scoreboard.
Baskonia announced an “urgent investigation” will now take place. “After a first analysis carried out by professionals specialized in the installation at the end of the match and a second review carried out early this morning, the investigation determines that the incident occurred due to human error by one of the technicians of the company responsible for the installation of the spotlights”, it says.
“Once the error was identified, Baskonia demanded an immediate review of the entire installation to guarantee the correct placement of the rest of the lights”, the press release continues.
Underlining the human error, the Basque club stated they had terminated the contract with the technical assistant: “Once this investigation, the analysis of the installation, and the verification that all other elements are correctly placed and comply with all safety measures are completed, Baskonia has decided to terminate the contract with the technical supplier and reserves the right to right to take appropriate legal action”.
