Mario Hezonja’s contract with Real Madrid is expiring at the end of the 2023/24 season, and Spanish outlet Marca reports that the reigning EuroLeague champions are beginning to accept the fact that the Croatian forward won’t be staying with the team beyond it.
They previously reported that Hezonja rejected two renewal offers from Madrid and that he is not satisfied with his role within the team. They wrote about him barely celebrating winning the Copa del Rey with the team and the general dissatisfaction of the Croatian player that goes beyond economic issues.
As for the details of his deal, when he signed the current contract, he was coming from UNICS Kazan, and during his stay at Madrid reached the heights of being one of the best forwards in the EuroLeague, and now asks to be paid as such, something that isn’t feasible for the Spanish powerhouse.
Also, it’s no secret Panathinaikos showed interest in Hezonja, as well as that he has a special connection with the Athens team. Marca already stated that the 29-year-old player has a three-year deal on the table from the Greens, for two million euros net per season.
Time will tell, but per the Spanish media writings, Mario Hezonja is spending his last months with Real Madrid.
This season, the former Orlando Magic, New York Knicks, and Portland Trail Blazers player is averaging 13 points and 4.4 rebounds in the EuroLeague, as well as 11 points and 4.4 rebounds in the ACB League.
