Former EuroCup champion and Finals MVP Ruben Douglas died at 44 years of age, his former team Fortitudo Bologna announced. Douglas had a sudden health problem in Costa Rica that proved to be fatal, his brother Ramon informed the Italian club.

Douglas, a notable scoring guard during his playing days, was a legendary figure for Fortiudo. In the 2005 Italian League Finals vs. Olimpia Milano, he drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer of Game 4 that handed Bologna a 3 – 1 win in the series and the second championship title in club history.

That summer Douglas moved to Russia for Dynamo Moscow. He led the team to winning the EuroCup title, earning Finals MVP before moving to Spain for Valencia where he spent the next three years.

Douglas, an American-born player who played with Panama’s national team in the 2006 World Championship, also had stints with Lottomatica Roma in Italy, Panionios in Greece, Cajasol in Spain, and Usak Sportif in Turkey. He played 23 EuroLeague games and had 40 EuroCup appearances.
