Following speculation surrounding several plays that occurred during the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoff Games 3 between Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv and Panathinaikos Aktor Athens, and Olympiacos Piraeus vs. FC Barcelona, played on April 30, 2024, Euroleague Basketball found out that referees made a mistake during the Piraeus match.
Per the official report, there was an incorrect no-call on Tomas Satoransky in the dying moments of the fourth quarter of the game between Olympiacos and Barcelona for not inbounding the ball under five seconds.
“With 16.3 seconds remaining until the end of the fourth quarter, FC Barcelona player Tomas Satoransky’s time with the ball in his hands before inbound exceeds the 5-second limit (FIBA OBR—Art. 17.3.1 The player taking the throw-in shall not take more than 5 seconds to release the ball). The referees should have called a 5-second violation, resulting in possession for Olympiacos Piraeus. Incorrect no call,” as stated.
EuroLeague also touched on a couple of other situations, stating that in the final minute of the Maccabi – Panathinaikos clash, “there is no conclusive evidence showing that Josh Nebo steps on the endline, as his heel might be lifted from the floor and the camera angle does not show an opposite view.”
There was also the situation with Matthias Lessort’s attempt to block Lorenzo Brown’s layup attempt, which referees determined as a legally blocked shot upon reviewing the situation. The call was correct, and EuroLeague explains why the officials proceeded with a jump ball.
“According to the EB Adapted rules and EB Case Book when a goaltending or basket interference violation is called that is then reviewed by use of the IRS and the decision is overturned, if neither team had gained immediate and clear control of the ball when the violation was called, the game will be restarted with a jump ball at the circle closest to where the violation occurred.”
On Filip Petrusev’s called foul at the end of the Olympiacos – Barcelona clash, which gave Jabari Parker three free throws and a chance to decide the match, which he did, EuroLeague states:
“With 1.0 second remaining in overtime, defender player Filip Petrusev contacts with his left hand the arm of Jabari Parker when he begins the upward motion that precedes the shot. The referees called a foul. Correct call.”
