For the first time since moving overseas, Markus Howard was officially named the winner of the Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy, averaging a competition-high 19.5 points per game in this year’s Turkish Airlines EuroLeague with Baskonia, which ended in the Playoffs against Real Madrid.
Moreover, he also became the record-holder for most points collected throughout a full EuroLeague season, scoring a total of 759 points over 38 games between the regular season, Play-In Showdown (against Maccabi Tel Aviv and Virtus Bologna) and EuroLeague Playoffs (against Real Madrid).
He did so by breaking another record, banking in 148 full threes during the 2023-24 EuroLeague season, overcoming Alexey Shved’s previous record which stood at 107 three-pointers made. The Russian scorer also held the total points record with 740 in the 2017-18 season with Khimki.
Markus Howard was followed by Mike James (17.9 points per game) and Wade Baldwin IV (17.4 points per game). All three won’t play in the EuroLeague Final Four as Baskonia, Monaco, and Maccabi Tel Aviv got eliminated recently.
According to the official press release, “At age 25, [Markus] Howard is the second-youngest player to ever win the award. Drew Nicholas was 24 years old when he won the 2006 Ford Trophy with Benetton Treviso”.
