When returning to Europe to sign with Barcelona in the summer – while his brother Juancho was joining Panathinaikos -, Willy Hernangomez wasn’t surely thinking about ending up on the wrong side of history in the decisive do-or-die Game 5 of the EuroLeague Playoffs with Olympiacos.
As the Greek powerhouse reached the third consecutive Final Four by becoming only the second team after Fenerbahce – which beat Monaco earlier on the road – to win a Game 5 of the EuroLeague Playoffs in their opponents’ court, the 29-year-old center reflected on a disappointing season.
Talking with Alex Biescas from AS, he said Roger Grimau’s team didn’t take advantage enough of its talent. “We are a vast team, with a lot of talent and we have not known how to take advantage of that”, the Spanish center commented after suffering the defeat to the Greek powerhouse.
“We have not been able to take advantage of all the talent that this squad has”, he added once more, probably referring to the lack of minutes played conceded to him in Game 5 (12:23). In the series against Olympiacos, he spent 16:22 minutes per game on the court, averaging 10.2 points and 4.4 rebounds.
He concluded by hardly commenting on not making it to the EuroLeague Final Four. “Right now I’m more screwed than thinking about what lies ahead. Tomorrow will be another day and we will focus, but now we have to go through this bad experience. Learn and gain motivation for the future”, he said.
