In 2015, the Anaheim native was selected with the eighth overall pick in the NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons. His stay at Motor City generated most of his games played in the league, 271. Midway through the 2018-19 season, he was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. Before the 2019-20 season, he signed with the Toronto Raptors. During the next two seasons, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs. In his most recent campaign, he was limited to G League action with the Stockton Kings, averaging 15.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per contest over 36 appearances.
Playing for Team USA in the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup Qualifiers, Johnson carries international experience to his new team. Representing the United States at the junior level, he was the most valuable player of the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship and won a gold medal. More contributions to gold-medal showings extended to the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship and the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.
