Panathinakos AKTOR will hold the 2024 edition of the annual Pavlos Giannakopoulos preseason tournament in the historic Panethinatic Stadium (Kallimarmaron).
The plan of Panathinaikos is to be able to accomodate at least 60,000 people in the open air venue, which was the home of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
Apart from Panathinaikos, Partizan Belgrafe, Anadolu Efes and Maccabi Tel Aviv will participate in the tournament. There are several links between the Greens and these three club: Partizan’s Zeljko Obradovic was the of the Greek side from 1999 to 2012 as the team won five EuroLeague championships while current Greens coach Ergin Ataman led Efes to the EuroLeague titles of 2021 and 2022. Maccabi is coached by Oded Kattash a former EuroLeague champion with Panathinaikos as player.
The plan for Panathinaikos is to organize “the biggest event that has ever taken place sports-wise and culture-wise in Kallimarmaron,” as club owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos, the son of the late Pavlos Giannakopoulos, has mentioned.
