Last year, Laso signed a two-year contract with Bayern Munich, but this summer, in a surprising turn of events, he decided to leave the team. The seasoned coach has now returned to Baskonia, where he once played for many years, this time as their head coach.
As he continues preparations for the new season with his team, the 56-year-old spoke with the Spanish newspaper AS.
“I was in Germany and didn’t want to rush things. I was living there with my wife and youngest son, while the older two had stayed in Spain. There was something that didn’t quite feel right inside me. There were signs telling me that I needed a change of scenery.”
He explained when the contacts to return to Vitoria started.
“My agent knows very well that he shouldn’t mention anything to me during that time. I was focused on what I was doing, concentrating on winning. I know that Baskonia had spoken with him some time ago, but he didn’t tell me. Later, managing the timing very well and very professionally, once the season ended, Josean Querejeta called me, we had a coffee, and things started falling into place.”
Laso came up through Baskonia’s youth academy and spent the first 11 years of his professional career (1984-95) wearing the jersey of the Basque team.
Now, he’ll try to bring success to the club from his hometown as head coach.
