The South Sudanese forward suffered a knee injury and will be ruled out starting the season

Maccabi Tel Aviv looked promising in the preseason, as demonstrated during the Pavlos Giannakopoulos Tournament a few days ago, beating the reigning EuroLeague champions of Panathinaikos.

However, they won’t count on Wenyen Gabriel’s participation in the early stage of the season. As announced by the Israeli team, he’s set to miss the action for 3-4 weeks due to a knee injury, forced to be ruled out starting the 2024-25 EuroLeague season. He underwent a MRI.

The 27-year-old was an important part of South Sudan’s trajectory in the last two years, participating with his national team in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup and this summer’s Olympics in Paris.

This will be his first European experience after spending six years between the NBA and the G-League. The Kentucky Wildcats alumni played most consistently during the 2022-23 season with the Los Angeles Lakers, alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davies.

Maccabi Tel Aviv lost Lorenzo Brown, Wade Baldwin IV, Bonzie Colson, and Josh Nebo in the summer; on the other end, they brought in Jordan Loyd, Jaylen Hoard, and more alongside the South Sudanese forward. They are set to debut in this year’s EuroLeague against ASVEL on October 3.
