Real Madrid star forward Mario Hezonja will be sidelined for an unspecified amount of time after getting ill and losing weight as a result.
“He might not be available because he was unable to play in the Super Cup final because he had a high fever,” Real Madrid coach Chus Mateo said ahead of the Spanish ACB League opener of Real Madrid against newcomer Leyma Coruna. “He has lost six or seven kilos and now he has to work to get that back because he’s been vomiting, had diarrhea and high fever for a while. We’ll try to work with him to get him back to full fitness as soon as possible”
It’s highly doubtful if Hezonja will recover in time for the debut game of Real Madrid in the EuroLeague against Bayern Munich (Thursday 3/10) on the road.
Mateo had mentioned that Real needs to make a signing or two after the team’s loss to Unicaja Malaga in the ACB SuperCup Final. The Spanish powerhouse has a roster of 13 players, including youngsters Hugo Gonzalez and Eli Ndiaye.
Hezonja finished the 2023-24 EuroLeague with 13.5 points and 4.6 rebounds.
