Some players don’t want to do anything related to the sport in their post-retirement career, and others are so stuck to it that they can’t think of anything else. Leo Westermann belongs to the latter category.
The former Partizan Belgrade, Fenerbahce, and other EuroLeague teams’ point guard is already keen on sticking with basketball after his career ends. “Talking with Mozzart Sport in Madrid, where he’s currently staying as a Fuenlabrada player in LEB Oro, he spoiled his future.
“I’m going to be a coach, I’m going in that direction without any hesitation. I was lucky to work with outstanding coaches and I know that I could do that job, he added. “First Saras and then Sasa Obradović convinced me to try, and deep down I know could be really good at it”, the 32-year-old playmaker said.
Being coached by legends of the game like Zeljko Obradovic, obviously, helps. “There are some guys in cinema and art who are just talents, and whatever they touch becomes gold. Zeljko [Obradovic] is that type of guy, he’s working very hard and he’s always ahead of all the tendencies”, he followed.
“As a coach, you want to take everything from everybody: nobody could be Zeljko or Saras [Jasikevicius]. Every coach I’ve had, there are things I really loved and others I wouldn’t be able to use. That’s the way I see things and how I have to involve this”, Leo Westermann added.
Being still recognized as one of the faces of Partizan despite having played there only from 2012 to 2014, he was asked about becoming their head coach in the future. “Who knows? That would be amazing. But it’s still a long time to be the coach of that team. That would be a dream coming true”, he answered.
