Olympiacos Piraeus star Evan Fournier had his best performance yet in the EuroLeague, leading all game scorers with 22 points in his team’s away win over archrival Panathinaikos Athens.
Fournier was particularly lethal down the stretch with multiple key 3-pointers. He hit the triple for the 85 – 83 with 2:51 remaining after Panathinaikos got their first lead in the game and more or less secured the victory for the Reds with another downtown bucket that the visiting side up 92 – 85, 51 seconds before the final buzzer.
Asked about Fournier’s signings, Olympiacos coach Giorgos Bartzokas gave credit to both the club owners and the fans for playing their part in the transfer.
“Evan was obviously an extra move that the Olympiacos management made, our final transfer in the offseason,” Bartzokas said in the post-game presser. “I have to thank two sides for this move. The presidents who made the transfer by spending so much money but also the fans. They were the first to give Evan the spark that made him want to come to Olympiacos. He saw the appeal he had to Olympiacos fans and the passion the fans have when they support the team.”
In the post-game flash interview, Fournier had commended Bartzokas for how he prepared the team and the plan that helped Olympiacos repel the comeback of Panathinaikos.
“The game plan from the coach was great,” Fournier said. “Trying to control the pace. Executing our game plan, really. Don’t rush. Basically do everything we do in practice every day. And that worked. Congrats to the coach.”
