Nigel Hayes-Davis turned a lot of heads with his statement of “no joy” in the European game. However, he really enjoyed himself against Bayern Munich.
After going scoreless in the first half, Hayes-Davis scored a total of 25 points in the second, giving Fenerbahce the crucial 87-76 win over the Germans.
Devon Hall added 12 points and the duo of Tarik Biberovic and Bonzie Colson scored 11 each for the home side.
“We beat one of the best teams of the EuroLeague at this point”, said coach Sarunas Jasikevicius, “and hopefully we will improve even better. It’s fantastic how Nigel didn’t lose his composure, despite getting into early foul trouble and he became so hot in the second half that it was impossible to stop”.
Thanks to this result, Fenerbahce got a 7-2 record, good enough for the top of the standings, while Bayern dropped to 6-3.
Carsen Edwards with 24 points had also a big night for the losing side, Devin Booker added 20 points but it was not enough.
Nigel Hayes-Davis taking over
Bayern had an impressive first period, leading by ten (21-11) and closing it with the score 21-13 in their favor and Edwards scoring nine of the first 14 points of his team.
However, everything changed in the second period with Fenerbahce playing lockdown defense. Edwards didn’t score again in the first half, which ended with Fenerbahce leading 35-30 and a partial score of 22-9 in 10 minutes of action.
With a three by Andreas Obst Bayern tied the score at 37 to start the second half and everything changed. The game was a shootout between Edwards and Hayes-Davis who scored 18 points in the period.
To be exact Edward made it a one-point game (59-58) and with less than two minutes left, Fenerbahce closed the period with an 8-0 run (67-58) and Hayes-Davis scored five of those points.
His crescendo continued after going scoreless in the first half and with 23 points he pushed the lead to 12 (72-58) with eight minutes left and there was no coming back for Bayern after that.
