Panathinaikos Athens coach Ergin Ataman joked that the NBA may invite his team to join the league, given the status and growth of the club overall in various departments.
The defending EuroLeague champions had just grabbed a comeback win from down 11 over Maccabi Tel Aviv to bounce back in the EuroLeague after a home loss to archrival Olympiacos Piraeus, so the mood was festive.
Asked about the new mobile app “Club 1908” that Panathinaikos, the reigning EuroLeague champion, launched, Ataman said the following: “About the application, I can say that we have the best team in Europe. We are the champions. This season in the beginning we have the best arena in Europe and one of the best in the world. Now we have one of the best team applications. We have maybe the best supporters. Maybe NBA teams care to come to play here in OAKA, but I think that the NBA direction after all these Panathinaikos has made in Europe: Great team, best arena in the world, best application, best support. Maybe we will invite us to the NBA. So, careful EuroLeague maybe you will lose Panathinaikos in the future with all these.”
Ataman believes that the app will actually be appealing also to fans of other teams.
As he said: “I am sure that all Panathinaikos fans in the world will download the application soon and I believe other team supporters will check what’s going on. They will be jealous of this. They will download it. Maybe afterward they will cancel it. In one week maybe you will find that we have a record in downloads.”
